May 2017 marked our 10th anniversary of building data and content solutions for the information industry. We took the opportunity to chat with co-founders Sam Herbert and Inigo Surguy about the origins of the company and changes over that time. Read our interview to find out more.

Want to learn more about machine learning?

Machine learning is a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers to learn without being explicitly programmed and is one of the techniques that can be used to help organisations get more value out of their content. If you want to find out more about machine learning and the impact it might have over the next 10 years, the Royal Society is a good place to start.They have put together a project on machine learning that aims to stimulate a debate, to increase awareness, demonstrate the potential of machine learning and highlight the opportunities and challenges it presents.

Annotating all knowledge

Another growing discussion with potential for adding more value to research is the facility for researchers to add annotations to their research. Researchers are natural annotators, but over the years this has not really been joined up, so that lots of different proprietary commenting systems have grown up. A small community group are making a move in the right direction with the aim of enabling better standardisation of annotation. This is being led by Hypothesis and you can read more on their website annotating all knowledge.

In related news, HighWire Press and Hypothesis have announced a partnership which adds open annotation capability to over 3,000 journals, books, reference works, and proceedings published on HighWire’s JCore platform.

Peer review

There is a lot of debate going on into the future of peer review and especially around how AI might impact on the peer review process. A recent report by BiomedCentral and Digital Science discusses what peer review might look like in 2030 and is worth a read.

New data and content discovery tools

New data and content discovery tools are emerging on the market that use enrichment techniques to improve the discoverability of data and content by adding context and knowledge to existing content and providing services and tools to the research community. A tool that is using algorithms to deliver a next-generation knowledge inference tool that can be used by publishers is Yewno Unearth.

Another recently announced discovery tool in the Life Sciences domain is lifesciences which applies semantic technology to PubMed articles to make them easier to find using life sciences terminology.

ICLR selects 67 Bricks to deliver flagship digital platform

The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting (ICLR), the authority on reporting case law in England and Wales, have selected 67 Bricks to build and deliver the next major upgrade to their flagship online platform.

This new version, planned for the summer of 2017, will provide significant improvements in the way ICLR users can access the vast archive of official law reports dating back to 1865. The new platform will have expanded breadth and depth of case law coverage.

This is a major upgrade to the existing platform and introduces a number of improvements, all of which have been designed to make the platform more useful and intuitive.

Tech Trends

The annual Tech Trends infographic produced by the STM Association has now been produced and this year it focusses on Trust and Integrity using the imagery of a pinball machine. AI assistance, machine learning and other content enrichment techniques play a big part in achieving a high score. Check it out at:

Marklogic 9 released

Over the last few months at 67 Bricks we have been working with the early access version of Marklogic 9 and have been looking forward to its public release so we can start using it with our clients. Marklogic have now released it to the public. This release includes major new features to improve data integration, security, and manageability. All designed to make integrating data from silos easier and faster, and to ensure that your integrated data is well-governed and managed.

Insights from the recent ALPSP seminar on data-driven organisations

At a recent ALPSP seminar publishing organisations got together to spend the day discussing the challenges and opportunities of becoming a data-driven organisations. The event was very insightful and covered practical experiences of cultural changes, organisation structures and implementations of how analysing data can transform the way an organisation operates. At the event David Leeming, Publishing Consultant at 67 Bricks, presented on how implementing content enrichment, AI and machine learning within an organisation can support the organisation’s goals to becoming data-driven.
